Meet the Puppies

WEEKS 12-14:

So many exciting things have happened in these last few weeks!

Apollo & Flancito had their GOTCHA DAYS! They were picked up and took a road trip to their new homes in Virginia. Dumpling is finally adopted, and her new name is Cookie! She will be going to Virginia as well and will be with my mom and her Golden Retriever, Judah Bear. I’ve received plenty of “PUPdates” from our puppy families, and all their furbabies are doing well.

In preparation for the warmer weather, our 3 adult doodles got their shave-downs. We do shave-downs every 6 months to prevent matting and to keep their skin in good condition. I love watching their coats grow back in evenly, and I truly believe they just feel and look so much better than when their hair is fully grown. All the pups here – Buckey, Komi, & Cookie – got their first official puppy cuts as well and they look so adorable!

Last but not least, we adopted our first Bernedoodle puppy, Chanel No.5. She is a tri-colored merle, unfurnished so she’s more Bernie than Doodle. Hoping to pair her with our Ziggy, who is higher percentage Poodle than Golden Retriever. Their pairing will produce Golden Mountain Doodles. Once we complete the testing for Chanel, we will officially add her to our breeding program.

WEEK 11:

We have started harness & leash training in full force this week. We work on the basics first – putting on the harness and letting them wear it until they’re not trying to come out of it. Next, we attach the leash and let them check it out. They try to chew on it, but we just remove it from their mouths saying “no biting” and they will stop for a few minutes and then try again. We then say “let’s walk” and start leading them as we walk forward. This definitely takes time as the pups are used to just being free to run around the yard.

Skye Belle went home with her new mama this week. We will be able to watch her grow up since she’s literally across the street with our neighbor. Skye has been able to bond with her mama since she would come visit often in preparation for “Gotcha Day”.

Skye Belle’s new mama, our awesome neighbor!
Congratulations to Mary Beth!

WEEK 10:

Our puppies are such rock stars! They continue to develop beautifully and all have such fun personalities. As “Gotcha Days” continue, we said farewell to sweet Izzy and are getting ready for Skye Belle to also head home next week to her new mama, our neighbor across the street.

All of the puppies have completed their first vet visit and are all set with their FL health certificates. They are all doing well settling down in their crates and are all very familiar with going potty outside. They have started enjoying treats now that I feel their bellies can handle them. We use them for training simple commands and to help them go into their crates.

They definitely know their way around our yard and get to run around chasing each other at full speed. It is becoming more challenging to keep them in our yard as they also like to venture into our neighbor’s yard. Lots of redirecting and running after puppies has been wiping me out! We are slowly introducing the harness & leash, but still need lots of work. Soon these pups will be taking walks around our house to practice for those longer walks around our neighborhood.

WEEK 9:

We are preparing for our next “Gotcha Days” for Izzy, Skye Belle, Flan & Apollo. They will be going to their first vet visit next week. All of our pups have been reserved or adopted except for Dumpling. She’s received lots of attention and even had a “Meet & Greet”, but she is still waiting for her perfect match.

Apollo was finally reserved and will be traveling alongside Flan to Virginia Beach as well. Our friends are driving them up to their new homes. For now we are helping the pups get ready by keeping them together in the playpen and crate. They will also be going on lots of car rides with us to help them get used to being on the road.

The rest of our pups (now 7 in total) are continuing to potty-train and have been doing well with basic commands. They are definitely getting bigger and stronger, and some have become escape artists! Flan and Skye Belle have both found a way to jump out of the puppy corral! Now they all need to be crated overnight.

During potty breaks they run, jump, pounce on and chase each other. They run through and under bushes, dig for treasures, and carry around the largest branches and sticks they are able to hold in their mouths. They are becoming very familiar with the yard, and are becoming curious about everything they see. Within the next week I will need to use the harness and leash in order to teach them boundaries and train them on how to walk with good manners.

Bear & Pearl (aka Berry) are adjusting to their new homes. They both have older Doodle buddies to bond with and their families are enjoying getting to know them. I’m so happy they are both with wonderful, loving families.

WEEK 8:

“Gotcha Days” are here!

The first ones to go to their new homes in March so far will be Bear, Berry, Izzy, Skye Belle, and Flan. These little ones have been busy getting ready for their new families. Potty-training and crate-training have both been very successful here up to this point. Nina has been helping with the basic commands. I’ve been carrying them out individually for potty-time, and, boy, are they heavy! They’re eating up a storm! We’ve got them on a good consistent schedule and clean-up has been much better now that they’re only pooping outside. They’ve taken multiple baths so they are starting to get comfortable with getting washed up, towel dried, and brushed. They’re just about to outgrow the puppy corral and have been spending more time in the living room inside the puppy playpen & crate.

The first 4 pups went to their 8 week vet appointment and did excellent! In a couple of weeks the remaining 5 pups will go. The vet was impressed by their size and coats. He said Flan was his favorite! He’s looking forward to meeting the rest of the pups.

In preparation for bringing the pups home, I’ve added a Goldendoodle Care page for our puppy families. It’s loaded with info and links to products I’ve found to be essential and helpful in raising these puppies and Doodles in general.

WEEK 7:

Oh my goodness!

We only have one more week left with our full litter of puppies! We are soaking up every minute we get with our little ones before some of them go to their new families. So far, the first pups that are scheduled to get picked up next week are Bear, Berry, and Izzy, all staying in Florida. At the end of the month, Flan will be picked up to travel to Virginia Beach. Skye (now Skye Belle) will also be staying in Florida right across the street from us, so she will be going to her new home in the next two weeks.

We still have Apollo and Dumpling looking for their forever homes. We have had many inquiries for Apollo, and those that have met him have all said he is a calm and very good boy. Still, no reservations have been made for him. Little Dumpling is such a cutie and I’m confident she will eventually get the attention she deserves soon!

During week 7 the pups were transitioned out of my husband’s office and into the garage. The potty clean up was just getting intense and I needed them to catch-on to outside potty time a lot better. The puppy pen is located in front of the door that leads to their new meal time and potty area. This makes it easier for me to keep up with the pups as they run in and out of their pens for meal and potty times. I believe this new set-up will lead to successful potty-training for this last week.

In addition to the new potty area, I’ve also been taking them out individually to a separate area to let them potty on their own. I carry a pup to the spot while repeating “potty-time”, set them down on the grass, and I say “good potty” once they pee and poop. Right after they poop, I carry them back to the puppy pen. This is very time consuming, but I think it’s crucial in preparing them to go to their new homes. They have to start getting used to doing things without their littermates. Next I will be feeding them individually instead of having them eating together from the large feeding bowl.

They also experienced their first full bath. I individually bathed them in our mop sink with a wonderful oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. They were brushed and then towel dried. Nails were clipped and they all looked extra cute and fluffy. So it turned out to be a rainy day, and my squeaky clean puppies ended up getting filthy again in just one quick potty break. Oh boy! Good thing we have puppy wipes.

I’ve started separating some of the pups in a separate crate to help them get used to being in an enclosed space at night. They cry for a bit but then settle down. In the morning I am still finding that they’re peeing in the puppy pen and crate, but not pooping. This is progress since they’re learning how to wait to poop outside. This morning I did see a poop but it was on the potty tray, which is still good in my book.

Each puppy has had their individual alone time with Darling in the house. They’ve also spent some time in the kitchen with the older dogs. Ziggy and Lilo still growl at them some, and it’s to be expected since the pups are still looking for something to latch onto and nurse. They don’t understand that not every big dog has milk! Our senior dogs don’t mind them too much and our cats have been curious about them. Juno in particular gets close to them and even let one of them lick his face.

WEEK 6:

Week 6 has been so fun with the puppies!!! The “Meet & Greets” have continued and they’ve been so sweet. Six of our nine pups have been matched with their perfect homes. As “Gotcha Day” is quickly approaching, we are still looking for homes for our last 3 puppies – Apollo, Sky, and Dumpling. We’re confident they will be perfectly matched as well, just have to be a little more patient. In the meantime our smart little puppies are learning, playing, and growing!

They are doing great with potty-training! First they started indoors on the potty-trays back in week 3. They moved on to the lanai potty area still on the trays during week 5. During week 6 we replaced the potty trays with a grass patch. Next we moved them outside to the front for the afternoon mealtime and potty time. Finally, they are in their own potty area in the backyard as of today! I took them out one-by-one saying “outside” as I picked them up out of their indoor playpen. I carried them outside to the potty area and say “potty-time” as I’m setting them down on the grass. As soon as they feel the grass they pee and shortly after they poop. Each time I say “good potty”. I pick them up right after they poop and take them back inside the playpen.

They are still nippy, but they are learning that biting each other too hard results in fights. I let it all happen as they have to learn bite inhibition among each other. Darling has been spending less and less time with them which is helping her dry up. They are massive eaters and have started eating their kibble with little water and doing well. They all received the 3rd dose of dewormer.

They are getting more and more playing time outdoors and with people of all ages. We’ve had plenty of friends over with their kids to love on them. Neighbors have also come to meet them when they see us outside. We ended their week 6 with a “Puppies & Wine Galentine” get-together with a group of my friends. It’s been such a great week of socialization for these little guys.

Next we’ll be working on having them spend time with the all the older dogs and the cats. Also, we’ll be working on feeding them individually and step it up with the crate training. We have 2 more weeks to work on all these goals, and the puppies will be more than ready to go home with their new families.

For the week 6 “Biggums Award”, Apollo wins again weighing in at a whopping 11lbs 3oz!!!

WEEK 5:

Well, it’s time to put our running shoes on! Ready, set, go!!!!

Week 5 has been a whirlwind for us here! These puppies are playing, running, rough-housing, and chewing on everything! We had to open up more space for them to romp around since it’s getting a little tight in the puppy corral now. They’re getting so BIG!

They now have a metal crate in their corral. It’s lined with blankets and towels and have water bowls attached to the inside of the door which remains open for now. They take turns sleeping in it and we’re hoping they all associate the crate with feeling safe and comfy.

Potty-training has now moved out into the lanai. We’ve ordered puppy grass, but for now we have the potty trays out there to get them used to going “outside”. They’re eating 4 meals a day and transitioning to only kibble and canned food. I used up the last of the puppy formula powder, but still grinding up the kibble and using warm goat’s milk to soften the mixture. They drink plenty of water which they have available at all times. They are loving all of the fun chew toys and learning to tug with the rope toys.

Also, lots of human socialization all day long. Now they’re excited to see and hear my voice and want to be picked up. We’ve learned to go into the room with shoes on. If not, they go right for the toes – OUCH! My twin girls are especially helpful with keeping the pups company while I’m doing other chores or have to step out. These puppies are getting plenty of cuddle time all day long.

They still try to nurse from Darling, but she will quickly move away and try to play with them instead. She’ll even get a toy to distract them from nursing! She’s now back on regular food, so she’s starting to dry up. Sometimes she regurgitates food for the puppies to eat, which is actually a natural and normal thing for mama dogs to do.

Papa Ziggy finally met all of his pups, and he’s still getting used to them. He does like to watch them, but he’s not sure what to do when they come up to him to play. He gets a little freaked out, it’s hilarious! Auntie Lilo wants nothing to do with them LOL!

The puppies enjoyed some time on the grass in a little playpen in the front yard. We’ve also had them enjoy some meals outside. They’re getting used to hearing all the interesting sounds of the cars driving by, dogs barking, birds singing, neighbors talking and coming by to see them. Whenever the weather is nice, they’ll have about an hour of outdoor time.

For the week 5 “Biggums Award” we have a tie for the first time!   Both Apollo and Buckey weigh 8lbs 14oz.

WEEK 4

Our puppies are thriving and keeping us very busy! This week they received their 2nd dose of dewormer and I’m happy to say they’re eating puppy mush and drinking water like champs. We love watching them as they play together and it’s fun to hear their little growls and barks.

Darling is still nursing them (standing up) about every 4-6 hours for very short periods and makes sure to wake me up at night to let her in to feed her babies at least once. She is still trying to clean up after them, but it’s mainly been my job to take care of all the puppy mess (woohoo!). They are also doing very well with potty-training and are leaving their sleeping area and doing most of their business on or around the potty trays.

This week we also had our very first “Meet & Greet”. Buckey is being adopted by our son, Danny and his fiancee, Izzie. It was so sweet to see them snuggling with little Buckey.

WEEK 3:

Our puppies have had an incredible 3rd week!

Lots of milestones have been reached. All of them have their eyes open and are able to hear now. They received the first dose of de-wormer. Darling has started weaning them on her own (feeding them for short periods, stepping away from the playpen for longer periods, nursing standing up, etc.). So instead of waiting until their 4th week, we decided to go ahead and introduce the puppy mush for mealtime. Darling still nurses in between, and the puppies are loving the new food. Of course, with the introduction of solid food also comes the beginning of potty-training. We started them off on 4 potty trays on one side of the playpen and a sleeping area on the other side. Still trying different set ups to see which one clicks for them since they’re still so young. Trying to use their natural instinct to potty away from their bed, so hoping they get better at it within the next few weeks.

They are also beginning to play and communicate with each other. It’s adorable! This week they also went outside and felt some fresh air for the first time. It was about 82 degrees and sunny, so we thought it was a perfect day to do some outdoor photos. Next time we’ll introduce them to feel the grass on their little paws and stay out a little longer to listen to all the interesting outdoor sounds.

WEEK 2:

The puppies continue to nurse well and gain good weight. We are noticing they are starting to balance on all 4 legs and even taking some wobbly steps. Since their nails are pretty long and sharp, we trimmed them so they are not hurting Darling during nursing.  The cute little crochet collars were getting tight around their necks, so we switched them out for the adjustable puppy collars. They are all sleeping for longer periods (about 2-3 hours), so Darling is enjoying some well-deserved “me time” out of the whelping nest. She is being a great mama to all of her babies, and it’s good to see her resting well. ENS is also going well, and all the pups have improved tolerance and recovery from each exercise.

Look who opened her eyes first: PLUM!

WEEK 1:

The pups are all nursing well, gaining good weight, and are quite comfy and cozy with their mama in the whelping nest. Here are some photos of them at one week old. One of my girls crocheted them little collars. My kids came up with their litter names.
